Black Cohosh

(Cimicifuga racemosa)

Black cohosh is a perennial plant that grows in central and eastern areas of the United States.
It was traditionally used by Native Americans as a popular remedy for female disorders such as menstrual cramps and hot flushes, as well as arthritis, muscle pain, sore throat, cough and indigestion. The juice of the plant was also used as insect repellent and was created by applying an ointment on snake bites.

The parts of the plant that are used for the herbal roots and rhizomes, fresh or dried.

The mechanism of action of black cohosh is not yet clear. It was thought to have estrogenic action, but there is growing evidence that seems to refute this belief.

Black cohosh is one of the main folk remedies for the symptoms of menopause such as hot flushes, night sweats, headaches, mood changes, heart palpitations and vaginal dryness. The initial research on black cohosh suggests that may improve the symptoms of menopause up to 6 months.

Contraindications:

* Do not use during pregnancy or breastfeeding
* Individuals with hormone sensitive cancers should avoid black cohosh
* Excessive doses can cause indigestion, headache, nausea, perspiration, vomiting, heaviness of joints, weight gain, low pressure
* Individuals who are allergic to plants of the family of ranuncolacee should avoid black cohosh
* Black cohosh contains small amounts of salicylic acid: individuals allergic to aspirin or salicylates should avoid plant
* Individuals who have suffered blood clots or stroke, epilepsy, liver disorders should avoid taking black cohosh

Interaction with medication:

* Because estrogen may have an action, black cohosh may interfere with hormonal replacement therapy or oral contraceptives
* It may interfere with the effectiveness of the chemotherapy drug cisplatin
